I heard you have 4 batteries; sounds pretty heavy to carry all of them. Have you tried out any battery packs? Like Electrovaya? I saw a story on TechTV a long time ago and thought you might use one, or even one from APC.

    Have fun in Africa! =)

    Hi Alex

Leo or you mentioned you are going to be in South Africa too. When are you due to arrive?

You actually want lots of little things rather than one big thing (a singular battery)...it creates a redundancy.

Africa is doing very well...there is great hardship, great opportunity, great things to do, great people...it's very much a land of extremes.

I will be in South Africa (Cape Town) on Saturday, the 19th.

I just read in the paper this morning that the majority of electricity is being routed to the wheat farmers in the south(?), with everyone else restricted to just 4 hours of power a day. That has to be a huge burden for the local content creation industry. It saddens me to see what is happening there.

Folks here are extremely resillient. They keep figuring it out. There are generators, areas that are unaffected, etc...

It's bad in places...but I think the folks who have stuck it out will reap great rewards when things turn around...and they will.

We forget how fortunate we are, flip a switch: light, open a valve: clean water. Those folks are admirable for their fortitude; their willingness to persist in the face of real adversity. They deserve better, and I hope to see them prosper soon.

It's amazing how creativity will find an outlet, regardless of the circumstances. It must be truly inspirational to watch and it's no wonder you regularly travel to Africa!

Enjoy Cape Town Alex. It is a beautiful city and the wine farms are fantastic, if the weather holds up. We are heading into winter and that brings rain and colder weather on the coast.

The Zimbabwe crisis is a source of tremendous frustration for us here in South Africa. Our government is completely opaque about its approach to Mugabe and all we hear is news about the worsening economy and the tremendous challenges our neighbours are facing because of one power hungry lunatic.

It is really good to hear Zimbabweans are working so hard to address their challenges. It means Zimbabwe will emerge from this crisis even stronger than they were before.
